Axie Infinity’s Stats Slump: A Play-to-Earn Reality Check
Axie Infinity ranks among the largest blockchain-driven play-to-earn games ever. However, its luster has dimmed considerably from its January 2022 peak. Then, a robust 2.78 million average monthly players flocked to the game. Yet, today’s count stands at a mere 359,254 average monthly participants, translating to a dramatic decline of over 87%.
Axie Infinity’s Dramatic 87% Decline in Average Monthly Users
The play-to-earn blockchain game, Axie Infinity, experienced a notable decrease in its average monthly users since January 2022. At that time, Axie Infinity attracted an average of 2.78 million monthly users. By June 2022, this number fell to 958,044.
The next month saw a decrease of roughly 191,240 users, leaving about 766,804 monthly users in July 2022. Since February 2023, Axie hasn’t surpassed the 400,000 mark nor dipped below 340,000, according to activeplayer.io figures.
The game, which uses non-fungible token (NFT) technology, was first introduced on the Ethereum blockchain. To expand, Sky Mavis, the game’s developers, developed a layer two (L2) chain named Ronin. The rollout of Ronin finished in February 2021, and by April of the same year, all Axie NFTs transitioned from Ethereum to Ronin.
Even with a decrease in monthly users, Axie has logged .28 billion in NFT sales over 20.32 million transactions. However, figures from defillama.com indicate that the total value locked (TVL) on Ronin has seen a significant decline. On December 3, 2021, Ronin’s TVL peaked at .487 billion, but it has since fallen to million.
The project’s native cryptocurrencies, axie infinity (AXS) and smooth love potion (SLP), have declined 97.13% to 99.65% from their record highs. In the last month, AXS decreased 1.3%, but it rose 4% in the past week. Meanwhile, SLP fell 2.2% over 30 days compared with the U.S. dollar. SLP ranks 351 among more than 10,000 cryptocurrencies, while AXS holds the 61st position on September 16, 2023.
More than 99% of AXS investors have faced losses since the game’s currency introduction. Axie’s unique active wallet count isn’t faring much better, with a decline of over 14% in the past 30 days. This month’s transaction count is down 6.53% from the previous month.
With a volume decrease of more than 43%, the project’s numbers look bleak. Although 359,254 monthly players is notable, Call of Duty’s mobile game tallied nearly 57.9 million players in August. This indicates Call of Duty had about 161.3 times more monthly active users than Axie.

Play-to-Earn Is Dead, But ScapesMania’s Launch Brings a Vital Alternative In Light of the P2E Apocalypse
PRESS RELEASE. P2E projects have reached a dead-end due to the inherent issues of the model. Token Prices and user bases are plummeting and revenue streams of such projects are no longer functioning. So, is this it for the P2E, and is there a way out?
May 4, 2023, MAHÉ, SEYCHELLES – After a tumultuous two years, the market cap for GameFi tokens stood at a staggering Billion USD at the start of 2022. Fast forward to 2023, and that amount stands at a much cooler figure of just over Billion USD.
Experienced game developers like Red Pill Company put this down to one simple fact – that these games did not focus on creating sustainable project revenue streams and engaging mechanics for the players. As a result, a project’s revenue streams become non-existent, and the project dies. When there is a significant decline in the crypto space, the benefits become much less attractive for players – and that is what has been seen in the industry this past year.
Simply put, not enough focus has been put on creating mechanics that attract and retain players and diverse and functional revenue streams. Now that the classic P2E games are not earning well, they have become defunct. The P2E market as we know it has died.
How ScapesMania Takes the Best from the Casual Market
On the flip side, there has been a notable increase in the casual Web2 gaming market in the same time period. Sidestepping the difficulty of fluctuating markets and relying instead on fantastic and engaging gameplay, Web2 casual gaming has stormed ahead of the competition. What’s more, the crucial parts of casual projects are the engaging gameplay that keeps players coming back, as well as well-established and functioning project revenue streams that allow the projects to prosper.
Precisely in this vein, the experienced blockchain game dev studio Red Pill Company has designed their newest project, ScapesMania, to capture some of the growing casual gaming market that has already reached .51 Billion in revenue in 2022 and is projected to hit .9 Billion by 2027.
With a hybrid-casual approach, ScapesMania sidesteps the issues of the dying P2E market by, to put it simply, not being a P2E and focusing on the gameplay and functioning project revenue streams. ScapesMania will appeal to the mass audience of Web2 casual players with its engaging mechanics and colourful art style.
For Web3 users, the benefits are numerous – token holders can influence the project’s direction through DAO Governance and make decisions on various events and features, such as buyback, burn and token staking, and receive game engagement benefits, as well as impact the development of an entire ecosystem of different games connected through the $MANIA token. Collaborate with a project that has enormous market dominance potential!
$MANIA Token Sale – Join the Whitelist!
The native $MANIA token which is the powerhouse behind the ecosystem will soon become available for purchase in a multi-stage token pre-sale, with a total of 1,280,000,000 tokens available. Discounts of 80% on the first 250,000,000 tokens are available until they sell out, reducing to a final discount of 10% in the public sale.
The $MANIA token sale will be available via the official website. Following the token sale, $MANIA will list on CEXs at a starting price of .01 USD.
Red Pill Company is also currently hosting an amazing giveaway of 0,000 in $MANIA tokens to celebrate the pre-sale. Token holders can also enjoy amazing bonuses and can earn tokens from the generous referral program. The pre-sale will start soon, so join the Whitelist now via this link to get notified! FBI Warns About Cryptocurrency Theft Scams Using Play-to-Earn Games
The FBI has issued a public service announcement (PSA) warning on the utilization of play-to-earn games as part of a scheme to defraud users of funds stored in the form of cryptocurrency. Criminals are introducing victims to this kind of game and then use malware to extract the funds from cryptocurrency wallets linked to the game, according to the bureau.
FBI Issues PSA on Play to Earn Games Crypto Scheme
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is warning about the introduction of play-to-earn games in schemes destined to steal funds from unsuspecting users. On March 9, the institution issued a PSA on this, explaining how criminals are luring users to put funds behind play-to-earn games.
According to the PSA, criminals establish a relationship with the selected victims, in order to gain their trust. After this, they lure them to participate in online play-to-earn games, that offer rewards for their actions, and to put funds in a cryptocurrency wallet as a form of staking mechanism.
The rewards advertised are proportional to the number of funds stored in the cryptocurrency wallet, so users are incentivized to put in more funds to get more rewards.
The games show fake rewards growing in their cryptocurrency wallet, and spend more funds to keep growing their rewards. However, when they desire to withdraw these rewards, criminals would drain their wallets of the deposited cryptocurrency, asking for more funds to help recover the stolen crypto, as a last theft against the targeted victim.
How to Avoid Being a Victim
In the PSA, the FBI also offers a series of recommendations to avoid being a victim of criminals using this kind of scheme. The first one has to do with segregating funds, as the bureau advises maintaining other funds separated from a gaming wallet, which should be created only for gaming purposes; this minimizes the impact of suffering a wallet drain.
Another recommendation prompts users to check their alleged gains using a third-party block explorer, to verify that these are real and are really being received in the wallet of whatever cryptocurrency is being used. The final recommendation advises users to check which sites have access to funds in their cryptocurrency wallets, and to revoke these accesses periodically to avoid loss of funds from unknown contracts.
The FBI issued several PSAs last year, including a pig butchering scam warning in December, and another one related to decentralized finance related in August.

Win.app changes Play-to-Earn to Play-to-Win
Win.app aims to bring in a new era for blockchain gaming by becoming the ultimate play-to-earn gaming infrastructure for Web3. Developers worldwide will soon have access to the Win SDK, an out-of-the-box solution that empowers their games to support NFTs and crypto rewards, alongside new game modes like PvP and tournaments, essentially transforming any mobile game into a competitive multiplayer experience for Web3.
Revolutionizing play-to-earn with Win SDK
The Win SDK was built with one main goal: to remove the hassle of monetization from the development process, allowing creators to focus on reaching their vision when creating the ultimate skill-based games.
It packs in all the key features of the play-to-earn experience:
- A complete blockchain-powered crypto payments solution that uses non-custodial wallets and Win’s proprietary $FTW token as in-game currency;
- NFT-based leveling system and staking rewards, allowing for unlimited gamification opportunities;
- A complex match-making and player rating algorithm that enables PvP gameplay and ensures that players are always matched with players of similar skills for a fun and fair experience;
- Real-time analytics for tracking all critical data;
- 24/7 player support – players will always have access to a dedicated support team that can handle any issue;
Win.app firmly believes that developers need to focus on their creativity and innovation, not on the monetization hassle.
The Win Realm – real Heroes are made, not born
The Win Realm is a component of the Win Ecosystem designed to highlight the potential of the Win SDK. It uses Heroes, unique Polygon-based NFTs (ERC-721) as player-owned characters, and features a fantastic journey encapsulating the adventures of three ancient tribes.
Every action of a player directly affects these Heroes. In the Win Realm, one doesn’t simply level up; they get mightier. The mightier the Hero is, the more opportunities one has: access to special tournaments, increased staking rewards, one-of-a-kind NFT collectibles, and much more.
More information on the Win Ecosystem is available on the Win Blog.
About Win.app
Win.app is a play-to-earn mobile gaming platform powered by the blockchain.
The platform enables players to compete against each other in skill-based games and earn crypto rewards and NFTs. Through its Win SDK, it allows mobile game developers worldwide to seamlessly integrate the P2E model in their skill-based games with just two lines of code.
Win’s core belief is that blockchain technology can change the world, and as such, it’s working tirelessly to be the driver of this change. They are redefining the concept of play-to-earn by rebuilding the P2E gaming infrastructure for Web3.
Play-to-Earn Gaming Sweeps the Crypto Space
Play-to-Earn games have gained tremendous popularity in recent years. The gaming community got hooked to it primarily due to the thrill associated with the games and the lucrative awards. If you look at the recent figures, some of the popular titles have more than 1 million active users. Every game, genre, niche, and the whole Play-to-Earn gaming space has a community around it, with members actively interacting and, in some cases, promoting the game on various social media platforms. Word-of-mouth promotion seemed to have worked well for these.
What are Play-to-Earn games in the true sense?
As the name suggests, any game that rewards users for participation will fall under this category. But, there’s a critical aspect here, the rewards offered should have some real-world value. So, if a game only provides coins that are redeemable within the ecosystem and of no apparent value outside of it, these wouldn’t come under the Play-to-Earn domain.
The rewards offered could be anything, ranging from the in-game tokens, the native token on the platform, NFTs, skins, and weapons, amongst others. Every game may reward users with one or more of these. It all depends on how the game is developed and the items integrated into it.
How do Play-to-Earn games differ from regular games?
It’s quite simple! For regular games, you have to shell out a certain amount, either for purchasing it or unlocking the full version. While in Play-to-Earn games, you get rewarded for active participation without having to shell a penny, though, for some of the titles here, you have the option to progress quickly through the initial stages by acquiring certain items from the marketplace.
Also, as discussed earlier, the rewards available in Play-to-Earn games hold value outside of it as well. To understand it better, let’s take an example. Say you are playing a game from the GTA series. Any points or rewards won for completing a mission help you progress in-game but cannot be sold or redeemed for fiat currency.
When talking about Play-to-Earn games, let’s consider ADA Demon, a popular title with a whole ecosystem revolving around it. Here, when you collect items or receive rewards, generally NFTs or the platform’s native token, these can be traded in the built-in marketplace or on exchanges. Also, there’s the option to stake the tokens, where you lock them on the blockchain for a certain period to verify transactions and receive a regular stream of funds as rewards.
Can I earn rewards without actually playing the game?
Yes, we now have titles that reward users simply for watching the live stream of the game, and these have become extremely popular amongst the gaming community. Methods like these are a great way to get users acquainted with the gameplay and understand the intricacies involved.
Besides, there are a bunch of other rewarding protocols employed, for instance, placing bets. Here, instead of directly playing the game, users stand a chance to earn if the player of their choosing wins the round or game, as the case may be.
What’s the future of Play-to-Earn games?
Play-to-Earn games are developed on the blockchain, and with the industry still evolving with each passing day, the future looks bright. And the best part, a large part of the industry is still unexplored, offering developers the option to come up with great ideas and fill these voids.
If you find a Play-to-Earn game with an intertwined ecosystem and a native token with market-oriented tokenomics, investing in it might not be a bad idea after all. Also, with options like staking and liquidity pooling, investors are bound to make decent returns with Play-to-Earn games. But it all depends on your current situation and the market dynamics.
Even if you don’t want to, the concept of Play-to-Earn games in itself is impressive and has a long way to go. The funds being pumped into the development are a testament to the craze building around these and how developers are leaving no stone unturned to make the most out of the situation.
When it’s come to Play-to-Earn games, there’s no dearth of innovation and creativity. We have a plethora of new titles released each day, employing the latest protocols and offering advanced features. If you haven’t tried these yet, we recommend starting with ADA Demon, Axie Infinity, or the De-Fi Kingdom for the best experience.
What Are Play-to-Earn Games? How Players Are Making A Living With NFTs
When anonymous developer Satoshi Nakamoto launched Bitcoin in January of 2009, nobody knew how impactful cryptocurrency would become. While rumors regarding its potential floated about, cryptocurrency changing the world was just a far-off pipe dream. Today, it’s all coming true, and what started as an experimental payment system for the techiest of the techies is disrupting industries worldwide; gaming included.
In hindsight, it’s no surprise that digital currency and digital worlds go together – cryptocurrency fits gaming like a glove. With the help of related blockchain technologies like NFTs, cryptocurrencies make peer-to-peer virtual worlds possible, empowering gamers through true ownership of the games that they play.
How Players Are Making A Living With NFTs
NFTs, or Non-Fungible Tokens, are blockchain records that prove ownership of unique digital items like pictures. When applied to gaming, NFTs can represent in-game equipment, characters, structures, and more. In games that incorporate cryptocurrencies and NFTs, players can generate an income either by earning cryptocurrency directly or by earning NFTs and trading them for cryptocurrency. As such, these games are commonly referred to as “Play-to-Earn”.
Play-to-Earn games come in one of two forms. Some, like the ever famous Axie Infinity, are stand-alone, meaning that they are bound to their own self-contained game world. Others, like the hotly anticipated Runiverse, span across several wide-scale cryptocurrency gaming platforms called metaverses.
The word “metaverse” comes from “meta” for “beyond” and “verse” for “universe”. Effectively, metaverses are interactive virtual worlds where players can socially experience independently-created games and events. Currently, the best-known metaverses are Decentraland and The Sandbox, both of which are quickly being populated by major companies like Atari and Adidas.
Soon to be present in both The Sandbox and Decentraland, along with their own metaverse, Runiverse is set to be the first cross-metaverse play-to-earn game where players can challenge others based on the performance of the crypto market.
In Runiverse, players pick a token from their cryptocurrency wallet and place a wager before facing off in thirty-second one-vs-one races where the speed of their runner depends on the live price action of their chosen token. Players whose token rises by the highest percentage during that time frame will see their runner sprint ahead of the competition to win them the race and their opponent’s wagered crypto.
Runiverse is part of Elite Mobile ($ELITE), a cryptocurrency system created for the world of mobile industry, designed to support influencers, NFTs, metaverses, and play-to-earn gaming in one place. Runiverse is Elite Mobile’s first foray into cryptocurrency gaming, and aims to create a gamified ecosystem that will benefit gamers both within the Elite Mobile community and the countless metaverses abroad.
The benefits that Runiverse delivers players goes even beyond earning cryptocurrency through races. Players can also buy and sell NFT tracks that automatically host competitions and send a 6% share of all winnings directly to their owners, earning them real passive income. For gamers looking to get started, the Runiverse Demo can be played directly from Runiverse’s official website. All players need to do to get started is connect their Metamask wallet and either invite a friend or challenge a random player.
Everything You Need to Know About Play-to-Earn on Algorand in 2022
The gaming industry is diverse and ever-increasing, and recent developments prove that this also applies to blockchain-powered gaming. As the latest estimates suggest, the number of crypto wallets related to gaming witnessed an astounding increase from 29,563 at the start of 2021 to a whopping 754,000 in the third quarter of 2021. With this impressive growth rate, it is no surprise that savvy crypto investors have started to focus on the next big thing in the crypto market: play to earn gaming.
Axie Infinity, for example, touched an astonishing market cap of .8 billion, which some experts believe led to a frenzy for P2E games. Other P2E games, such as The Sandbox, saw an upsurge in activity, reaching millions of users globally. So far, most of these popular P2E titles are based on the gold standard of smart contracts, Ethereum.
However, similarly to the DeFi space, users and investors alike have started to voice their concerns about Ethereum’s limitations, namely scalability and high transaction fees. To tackle these issues, P2E game developers turned their attention to Ethereum alternatives that can truly support the growth of this nascent industry.
Boasting a multi-billion dollar market capitalization, Algorand ($ALGO) is undoubtedly among the most prominent Ethereum challengers in 2022. Since its launch in 2019, the ecosystem has seen plenty of migrations from both existing and new projects – including various P2E developers. Thus, without further ado, let’s take a look at everything Algorand has to offer to the P2E industry right now.
Why choose Algorand over Ethereum?
Algorand fans often describe the blockchain as one of the world’s most decentralized, scalable, and secure DLT infrastructures. It has a vast ecosystem of projects, including cutting-edge NFT marketplaces, some of the leading crypto tools and resources available in the market, and projects that are trending in the DeFi economy.
Technologically, Algorand comes with all the Layer-1 features and capabilities that crypto enthusiasts know since Ethereum – including its smart contracts, Algorand Virtual Machine (AVM), atomic transfers, and rekeying features. Among its most stand-out features is the AVM.
What AVM brings to smart contracts is that it interprets TEAL (Transaction Execution Approval Language) programs, consisting of a set of opcodes, to implement the logic of Smart Contracts and Smart Signatures. In a nutshell, it makes the process more scalable, fast and secure, less risky, low-cost, and fast. And with a block time of fewer than five seconds and a transaction fee of less than .0013, Algorand is currently among the most efficient Layer 1 solutions on the market.
The atomic transfer features of Algorand help make complex transfers smooth and high-speed. Complemented by a nominal transaction fee, these transfers are significantly low-cost for execution. These atomic transfers are compatible with all Algorand assets and multi-party transfers, which is a substantial advantage for P2E developers and players
Finally, the rekeying feature of Algorand helps solve operational bottlenecks by entrusting users with the option to change their private spending key without changing their public address. Apart from efficiency, rekeying also brings flexibility without losing continuity in the process.
Algorand and P2E
The Algorand ecosystem is growing, and it’s growing fast. According to official numbers, there are now more than 500 organizations worldwide leveraging the blockchain. When it comes to play-to-earn, the Algo Gaming Guild could verify north of 40 projects that are currently building on Algorand. This includes trading card games like Algo Clash, racing games including Drone Racing League, and real-time strategy games such as zCircuit and Cosmic Champs.
While speaking of the utility benefits of Algorand as a platform for P2E Games, Sayan Mukherjee, the Head of Business Development of Zone, an Algorand-based P2E game, says his development team chose Algorand because of two primary reasons.
First, there are speed, scalability, and low transaction costs. “The Algorand blockchain is really fast with immediate transaction finality. It enables us to give a near web2 experience to gamers globally with respect to speed,” Mukherjee says.
Secondly, Mukherjee says, Algorand is carbon negative. “Zone has a massive NFT ecosystem with the AFK Elephants (afkelephants.com), which also act as P2E rewards. Building the GameFi ecosystem on Algorand solves global ESG concerns while the users have a top-notch user experience. It gives the popular gaming term “gg” a new meaning altogether – green gaming!”
Earn vs. Play
Even though the P2E industry is growing every single day, experts have already spotted a bottleneck that could curb the popularity of the space. While gamers usually appreciate economic rewards for their playing time, many have pointed out that contemporary P2E titles are more “earn” than “play.” In other words, they just aren’t fun to play.
Unsurprisingly, the Algorand community has developed high hopes for one of its most promising upcoming P2E titles, Cosmic Champs. The project, which was already named as one of this year’s top NFT games by CoinMarketCap, and praised by the media as Algorand’s “most technically advanced game design,” is on a mission to become a contender for the top P2E release across all blockchains in 2022.
Developed by the gaming studio Mad Shapes, Cosmic Champs, a universe of real-time battle arenas, is the first three-dimensional real-time P2E game to land on Algorand. The studio has significant experience developing 3D mobile games and has been involved in the creation of various successful titles prior to its venture into P2E.
Additionally, unlike most P2E projects, Cosmic Champs is frictionless and immensely user-friendly – players aren’t even required to have a wallet or prior crypto-knowledge. As Matt Blanchard, a co-founder of Cosmic Champs says, “our game will be free to download and free to play. It’s important that the P2E economy has a level playing field that welcomes everybody, anywhere in the world. That’s the key to mass adoption.”
Of course, despite its focus on gameplay, Cosmic Champs still offers considerable economic incentives to its player base. In fact, as a result of better gameplay mechanics, the team expects player loyalty and thus user rewards to be quite competitive, potentially surpassing the earning potential of most of its peers. To reinforce this notion, the developers have added a native token to the game’s NFT rewards, which is scheduled to launch on April 21, 2022.
According to Blanchard, the utility of the $COSG token and a future DAO will not only make users feel actively involved in the governance of the game, but it will also help to further grow the Cosmic Champs game into an entire gaming metaverse. Among $COSG’s use cases are staking rewards, purchases on an NFT marketplace, minting new NFTs, and benefits for the gameplay.
Additionally, Cosmic Champs also allows for fractional NFTs that help maintain high-quality character aesthetics, necessary for the game to succeed in the long run, while helping to mint a significant number of NFTs that set the ground for a thriving user base.

Overall, the game is inclusive, engaging, and exciting for casual and novice participants and hardcore gamers. It is a highly democratic arena that allows anyone to play without having the Cosmic Champs NFTs. In the future, by utilizing and expanding on successful DeFi concepts like staking and earning, the project could grow exponentially – and this, of course, also foreshadows a bright future for the whole Algorand ecosystem.
