Democrats to Return 2.2% of $45.2 Million Donation Made by FTX’s Co-Founder Sam Bankman-Fried
After the disgraced co-founder of FTX, Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF), donated .2 million to Joe Biden’s campaign in 2020 and more than million to Democrats leading up to the U.S. midterm election cycle, three major Democratic organizations plan to return 2.2% of the funds, or million, to the now-defunct crypto exchange. Of the total million, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) is setting aside 5,000 to return to the bankrupt estate.
Democrats to Return Just 2.2% of Funds, Donated by Disgraced FTX Co-Founder, to Now-Defunct Crypto Exchange
Before his arrest, Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) was known to have made significant contributions to the Democratic Party. In fact, estimates indicate that one in three members of Congress received a direct contribution from SBF and his inner circle. Since 2020, SBF has donated substantial sums of money to Democrats, and he has claimed to have made undisclosed donations to Republican candidates. SBF made the second-largest monetary donation to Joe Biden’s campaign in 2020, giving the current president .2 million.
In a press briefing on Dec. 13, 2022, a reporter asked White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre if the administration would return the funds. Jean-Pierre declined to comment, citing the Hatch Act. “Anything that’s connected to political contributions, from here I would have to refer you to the DNC,” Jean-Pierre said. SBF was the second-largest donor to the Democrats under George Soros, giving significant funds to Joe Biden’s campaign in addition to other contributions leading up to the U.S. midterm elections.
According to Federal Election Commission (FEC) records and data from opensecrets.org, SBF gave Democrats at least million in donations. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has suggested that SBF may have given significantly more to Democrats over the years, possibly even up to billion. The bankrupt estate is now asking for the .2 million given to Democratic candidates, political action committees, and Biden to be returned to the company so it can pay back creditors. Three major Democratic organizations plan to return million of the funds, which represents approximately 2.2% of SBF’s total .2 million contribution.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee will return 3,000, according to various news publications. The DNC also plans to return 5,000 to the bankrupt FTX estate. “Given the allegations of potential campaign finance violations by Bankman-Fried, we are setting aside funds in order to return the 5,000 in contributions since 2020,” a DNC spokesperson said. “We will return the funds as soon as we receive proper direction in the legal proceedings.”
Returning million or 2.2% of the funds back to the bankrupt estate still leaves .2 million that SBF gave to the party’s PACs and candidates. It is notable that the Democratic parties have not offered to return the entire remaining balance, and some U.S. bureaucrats have taken it upon themselves to donate the money to charity. One concern is that the funds may have been acquired through fraudulent means, which could be viewed as rewarding and legitimizing such behavior.
Moreover, returning only 2.2% of the funds back to the bankrupt estate could be seen as a political calculation rather than a moral one. It’s unclear whether the FTX debtors will be satisfied with receiving just 2.2% of the funds or if they will seek to reclaim a greater portion of the political donations made by Bankman-Fried.
What do you think the Democratic Party and its candidates will do with the remaining .2 million in donations from Sam Bankman-Fried? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
CoinEx Charity Book Donation Worldwide: Over 10,000 Books for Children’s Dreams
In many places around the world, schools cannot provide children with a sufficient supply of books due to poor financial conditions, nor can parents afford books. Meanwhile, the reading ability of children who have been raised in an environment without books is inferior to the average level, which negatively affects their life prospects.
Focusing on education for young children worldwide, CoinEx Charity will kick off Book Donation Worldwide on May 26, 2022, to improve children’s reading environment. The campaign will begin in Turkey and take CoinEx Charity to schools in poor regions across 11 countries, including Syria, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Nigeria, Malaysia, India, Brazil, Germany, and South Korea. CoinEx Charity will help schools build charitable reading corners and donate books to provide more reading opportunities for local children.
Find out more about the campaign at: https://mobile.twitter.com/CoinExCharity
A book that helps children succeed
Books are a treasure house that’s full of information and wisdom — they help children succeed. However, most schools around the world do not have a library, making it difficult for children to explore the vast breadth of knowledge. Even in the US, which is the world’s wealthiest country, one in every 4 children grows up without learning how to read.
CoinEx Charity’s Multi-Million-Dollar Charity Fund is a charitable foundation dedicated to alleviating the “learning poverty” across the world. As International Children’s Day is around the corner, the fund will launch a charity campaign to build reading corners for and donate books to poor schools around the world.
CoinEx Charity’s first 3 book donation events will take place in Antakya (Turkey), Damascus (Syria), and Bangkok (Thailand) on May 26, May 28, and May 30, respectively, and about 4,000 books will be donated to 7 local schools. Moreover, CoinEx Charity has also purchased bookshelves to build reading corners for each school. In June, the campaign will arrive in 8 countries, covering Vietnam, Indonesia, Nigeria, Malaysia, India, Brazil, Germany, and South Korea, with a total of about 9,000 books to be donated. During the campaign, it is expected that 13,000 books will be donated and charitable reading rooms will be built to provide more and better learning spaces for poor children, allowing them to read and learn with passion anytime, anywhere. Powered by an ocean of books, children will be inspired to find their dreams and strive for a better future.
CoinEx Charity has partnered up with the Syrian children’s aid organization Youth Association and the Malaysian charity MUDA Cheras, and will jointly host the campaign in Syria and Malaysia with its partners. This is the first cooperation between CoinEx Charity and an international charity organization. These new partners will expand the influence of the campaign and encourage more caring individuals and charitable organizations worldwide to join hands in improving children’s learning environment with the power of charity. CoinEx Charity also looks forward to building long-term, sustainable partnerships with more charitable organizations in the future. Together with its partners, CoinEx Charity will gather more momentum to convey the message of love and warmth and help more children grow up healthily and happily.
Respond to the international call & venture into charitable education
Books open up an unexplored continent of imagination, and the increased access to books allows children to become more competent, which creates level playing fields across the planet. UNESCO, the World Bank, and the International Commission on Financing Global Education Opportunity are all calling for expanding the supply of books in schools around the world to improve learning conditions. CoinEx Charity actively responds to the international call and devoted more resources to charitable education to help poor schools improve the learning environment for children. Though they might seem small, books serve as a window on a broader world for children and help them realize their dreams.
During the campaign of Book Donation Worldwide, CoinEx Charity will donate over 10,000 books to impoverished schools in 11 countries to pass on love and knowledge. It also hopes to encourage more governments and charities around the world to help more schools build libraries and provide students with a decent learning environment via the power of charity. Education can transform children’s futures, thus making the world a better place.
Next Earth DAO Makes a 330 BNB ($204,000) Donation
Next Earth, a replica of Earth built on the blockchain, announced that it has donated 330 BNB (around 4,000 USD) to environmental causes from contributions made in November. The donation was made via a voting DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization), in which landowners vote on which charities to donate to. The percentage of each vote corresponds to the percentage of funds that the charity will get.
The recipients of Next Earth’s November donation were Amazon Watch, Kiss the Ground, SEE Turtles, and The Ocean Cleanup. The Ocean Cleanup won the most votes, receiving 493 votes and nearly 200 BNB. Amazon Watch was the runner-up, receiving 215 votes and around 87 BNB, while Kiss the Ground received 56 votes and SEE Turtles received 53 votes.
This is the latest in a series of monthly donations made by Next Earth. In October, Next Earth donated over ,000 to environmental causes.
Next Earth was created as an NFT-based replica of Earth with a map interface allowing users to browse virtual land tiles for sale. Next Earth is migrating to the Polygon network to decrease gas fees, improve stability and accessibility.
10% of all purchases are donated to environmental causes via the voting DAO. Landowners can vote on which charities receive donations each month, with the percentage of each vote corresponding to the percentage of funds that the charity will get.
The Selected Charities
The winning charity, The Ocean Cleanup, focuses on cleaning up the world’s oceans. The organization was founded by Boyan Slat, a Dutch entrepreneur when he was only 16 years old.
The Ocean Cleanup is using technology to develop a system to passively clean up the world’s oceans. The system consists of a large U-shaped floating barrier that collects debris as it drifts in the water. The barrier is attached to a platform that sits at the surface of the water and serves as a collection point for the debris. Next Earth’s donation will help support The Ocean Cleanup’s efforts to clean up the world’s oceans and prevent further damage to our planet’s environment.
The next charity, Amazon Watch, focuses on defending the rainforest and its inhabitants. Amazon Watch was founded in 1996. The organization is based in Oakland and works in partnership with indigenous communities in the Amazon rainforest to defend their land, forests, and rights.
Amazon Watch has conducted campaigns to oppose the construction of dams, the drilling for oil and gas in the rainforest, and the expansion of cattle ranching into the rainforest. The organization also provides training and support to indigenous communities working to protect their land. Next Earth’s donation will help Amazon Watch continue its work defending the rainforest and its inhabitants.
The third charity, Kiss the Ground, is working to restore soil health. The organization works to increase awareness of the importance of healthy soil for reversing climate change and restoring human health. Next Earth’s donation will help Kiss the Ground continue its work restoring soil health.
The fourth charity, SEE Turtles, focuses on protecting sea turtles. SEE Turtles was co-founded by Dr. Wallace J. Nichols in 2008. The organization works to protect sea turtles through education, advocacy, and conservation programs.
SEE Turtles organizes beach cleanups and nest monitoring programs, educates people about sea turtles and their environment, and advocates for laws that protect sea turtles. The organization also raises public awareness about the threats faced by sea turtles through its website and social media channels. Next Earth’s donation will help SEE Turtles continue its work protecting sea turtles.
The Importance of Blockchain For Good
Blockchain projects are increasingly realizing the importance of giving back to society. Next Earth is just one example of a blockchain project using its technology to support charitable causes.
Next Earth’s donations are made in an effort to help preserve and protect the environment. The company plans to continue donating a portion of its proceeds to environmental causes each month. The blockchain’s ability to facilitate transparent, immutable transactions makes it a perfect platform for supporting charitable causes.
Blockchain projects that are looking to do good in the world should consider how they can use their technology to support charitable causes. Charitable causes can be funded directly via blockchain projects or through third-party charities that are looking for new sources of funding.

Mysterious Bitcoin Fund Completes $75M Donation to Preserve Privacy
The Unknown Fund claims to have now donated a total of million to groups and companies working on privacy preserving technology. The Anonymous-promoted Bitcoin fund was first detailed in mid-November.
The origins of the funds are largely unknown and, of course, the beneficiaries of the donations are also keeping quiet. The secrecy has understandably created scepticism amongst observers.
Unknown Fund Says All Bitcoin Donations are Now Completed
The decentralised hackivist group Anonymous first detailed the Unknown Fund on November 13 via a press release. It claimed that the million in Bitcoin would go towards groups or companies working on privacy-enhancing technologies.
Other than Anonymous’s involvement, and the motive and value of the fund, there is little known about the origins of the Unknown Fund. The release only calls them “ordinary, anonymous people from different countries” that met on 4chan.
Thanks to the understandably shadowy nature of just about every aspect of the mysterious Bitcoin fund, some observers have questioned its authenticity:
So.. this "Unknown Fund" that plegded m to Bitcoin privacy projects has turned out to be a hoax? Has anyone applied and heard back from them?
— Hasu (@hasufl) December 6, 2019
However, since mid-November, the Unknown Fund’s Twitter account has started posting press releases from various privacy-friendly projects. It makes no comment as to whether the groups receiving the publicity are beneficiaries of the Unknown Fund. However, they are all related to causes outlined in the original press release.
Today, the Unknown Fund Twitter account posted:
All projects are funded.
— Unknown Fund (@fund_unknown) December 11, 2019
Of course, it did not elaborate on which projects they are, how much Bitcoin each has received, or whether or not the “funding” is an investment or a donation (both words are used in the original press release). The group has also not posted any proof of transactions, something that an earlier anonymous Bitcoin fund, Pineapple Fund, had made sure to do:
Pineapple fund posted proof of tx. Will you guys be doing this as well? I'd like to write about this, but – need more to run with.
— MikeE (@MikeE_NZ) December 11, 2019
The major difference between the 2017 Pineapple Fund and the Unknown Fund is the beneficiaries and their concerns. The Pineapple Fund saw million in Bitcoin donated to medical research, environmental conservation, and human rights concerns. The organisations receiving funds each have their name, the amount they received, and the transaction ID posted on the fund’s website. Being registered charities, these organisation would have had no issue with the publicity.
The situation is very different for those working on deep privacy technologies. Lawmakers around the world are historically not too fond of innovations that allow the general public to do things out of view. Just yesterday, a US Senate hearing saw tech firms once again pressured into putting “back doors” in encrypted messaging applications. Those working on any protocols that are more disruptive than the “terrorist-enabling” WhatsApp messenger (likely any that the Unknown Fund is considering donating to), will obviously be more reluctant to have such information made public.
